Shielding design of the 200kW Pb-Bi spallation target for the transmutation experimental facility

Sasa, Toshinobu; Oigawa, Hiroyuki; Tayama, Ryuichi*; Hayashi, Katsumi*

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 41(Suppl.4), p.30 - 33, 2004/03

The construction of Transmutation Experimental Facility (TEF) is planned under the framework of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) project. A liquid lead-bismuth (Pb-Bi) spallation target with beam power of 600MeV-200kW will be installed into the TEF. Analyses were performed to determine the effective thickness of biological shield for Pb-Bi target by using both MCNPX and ATRAS code system. Thickness of around 6m should be required to decrease the radiation level. The streaming analyses through the proton injection beam duct and the primary cooling circuit piping were also performed. The result of the beam duct streaming shows good agreement between the results of MCNPX and DUCT-III. The additional shield must be installed to suppress the activation of accelerator components. In the case of streaming through the primary cooling circuit piping, it is proved that the radiation level at the exit of the shield is allowable. The radiation level can be much more reduced by optimizing the bending position and length of the piping.

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 41(Suppl.4), p.50 - 53, 2004/03

In order to estimate accuracy of the various calculation methods for the neutron streaming through a maze and duct in proton accelerator facilities, we performed benchmark analyses by using the radiation shielding design codes. According to the results of the benchmark analyses, it is concluded that NMTC/MCNP, MCNPX and DUCT-III are applicable to actual calculation of the duct-streaming radiations for J-PARC.

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 41(Suppl.4), p.46 - 49, 2004/03

A simple design code for duct-streaming radiations, DUCT-III was applied to the analyses of the streamed neutron spectra measured at TIARA labyrinth with two bends. The code satisfactorily reproduced the measured neutron energy spectra and the Monte Carlo calculations, except that every calculation overestimated the measured thermal components by factor of 2 or 3.

Evaluation of shielding performance for a spallation neutron source facility in the J-PARC Project is important from a viewpoint of radiation safety and optimization of arrangement of components. This report describes evaluated results for the shielding performance with modeling three-dimensionally whole structural components including gaps between them in detail. A Monte Carlo calculation method with MCNPX2.2.6 code and LA-150 library was adopted. Streaming and void effects, optimization of shield for cost reduction and optimization of arrangement of structures such as shutters were investigated. Horizontal required shield thicknesses were ranged from about 6.5m to 7.5m as a function of neutron beam line angles. A shutter mechanism for a horizontal neutron reflectometer that was directed downward was devised, and it was shown that the shielding performance of the shutter was acceptable. An optimal biological shield configuration was finally determined according to the calculated results.

This report is intended to make it easier to apply the measured data obtained from the Gap Streaming Experiment, which was conducted at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) during about two months beginning at the start of March, 1992 as the sixth one of a series of eight experiments planned for the Japanese-American Shielding Program for Experimental Research (JASPER) which was started in 1986. For this reason. the information presented includes specifications and measurement data for all configurations, compositions of all materials, characteristics of the measurement system. and daily-basis records of measurements. The Gap Streaming Experiment was planned to obtain the data of neutron streaming characteristics in the inclosure system above the core of an advanced fast reactor for verification and improvement of the analysis method to be applied to the shielding design. A iron-lined solid or slit concrete assembly was placed, with or without a spectrum modifier forming soft incident neutron spectrum, behind the TSR-II reactor of Tower Shielding Facility. Inserting central cylinders and cylindrical sleeves gave various gap width and offset in the slit concrete assembly. Neutron flux was measured behind the configurations with various types of detectors. The integral neutron flux in wide energy region was measured on radial traverse and on the axis behind the concrete assembly in almost all configurations. Neutron spectrum and fine radial distribution in high energy region was measured further in case of hard incident neutron spectrum, Information presented in this report is based mainly on a report issued by ORNL (ORNL/TM-12140. "Measurements for the JASPER Program Gap Streaming Experiment"). Additional information reported by the assignee is utilized also.

With use of the two-dimensional discrete ordinates code DORT and the standard groupwise shielding design library JSSTDL produced from the latest evaluated nuclear data library JENDL-3.2, experimental analyses for the representative configurations in the Radial Shield Attenuation Experiment of the JASPER were performed. The results were compared with those obtained with use of traditional method DOT3.5/JSDJ2 for the previous JASPER experimetal analyses. In general, the change of the cross section library gives higher results and the change of the transport code gives lower results. Finally the new analysis method gives better agreement with the experimental results and also less deviations of calculational errors between various detectors. Experimental analyses for the thick concrete configulation in the Gap Streaming Experiment of the JASPER was also performed with the new analysis method, after solving the poor agreement found in last year with the original JASPER experimental analyses. The same tendency due to the library change was confirmed with the above mentioned analyses of the Radial Shield Attenuation Experiment. Compilation of the input data necessary for future reanalyses of important configurations in JASPER experiments were continued through the above-mentioned experimental analyses and related informations were added for repletion of the database preserved in a computer disk holding previously accumulated data. Input data descriptions were made for auxiliary routines needed for the experimental analyses and their sample data were compiled and stored in the database.

Study on improvement of reactor physics analysis method for FBRs with various core concept

Investigation was made on the follwing three themes as a part of the improvement of reactor physics analysis method for FBR with various core concept. Part 1: Investigation of Error Estimation of Neutron Spectra in FBR and Suggestions to Improve the Accuracy. In order to improve the spectrum unfolding method used in fast experimental reactor JOYO, a trial was made to evaluate the error in the estimated neutron spectrum, cause by cause. And the evaluated errors were summed up to obtain the most probable and reasonable error as possible. The summed up error was found relatively small compared to the error caused by the uncertainty of cross section data: most of the error in the spectrum unfolding method can be attributed to the error in cross sections. It was also found that the error due to the fission spectrum causes a considerable error in the high energy neutron spectrum which is over several MeV. Part 2: Study on Reactor Physics Analysis Method for Gas-Cooled FBR. In gas-cooled FBR, the portion of coolant channels in core volume is larger than sodium-cooled FBR. This leads to strong neutron streaming effects. For sodium-cooled FBR, several methods were proposed to evaluate the neutron streaming effect, however, these methods can not be used directly to gas-cooled reactor because the direction dependent diffusion coefficient becomes infinitive along the direction pararel to the coolant chammel. In this study, a new method is proposed to evaluate the neutron streaming effect, based on the method taking the axial buckling into consideration, which method was originally proposed by K$"o$hler. Part 3: Study on Reactor Physics Analysis Method for Water-Cooled FBR An investigation was made on low-moderated water-cooled FBR, on the point that the ordinary used analysis method for FBR may give considerable difference in results in such core. In light water reactors, it is well known that the space dependence of self-shielding effect of heavy nuclides are considerably ...
